Timing and primary chains
Be careful not to mix up the secondary chains, the transmission (primary) chains and the distribution chains.
The secondary chain is the link between the drive pinion gear and the crown gear on the back wheel. This chain is part of the chain kit, it is outside the engine and thus clearly visible.
The primary chain joins up the crankshaft and the gearbox. This connexion can also be done by the pinions. It can be simple, double or triple.
The distribution chain insures the regulation mechanism for the entry and the exit of the gas through the combustion chamber by creating a perfect coordination between the camshafts and the crankshaft.
This synchronisation is sometimes done by the pinion (VFR) and rarely by the belt.
There are two main types of distribution chains:
-
NON MORSES chains : can be compared with smaller secondary chains used for the first 4-stroke-engine generations.
The most common models are BF05MA, BF05T, and BS05MH. - MORSES chains, sometimes called silent chains, used for most new motorcycles.
There are 3 categories:- Type 82 (including the old categories 75 and 79)
- Type 92 : stronger and more silent
- Type 98 : the newest model, more resistant and silent.
We only sell brands of high quality as BORGWARNER (Japan) and Tsubaki Japan, excluding all other less reliable brands. Chain specialists as RK and DID do not produce distribution chains.
